Overview

Spruce designed and developed the Long Island Sound Resilience Resource Hub as a user-centered digital platform that provides coastal communities with a comprehensive collection of tools, funding opportunities, training resources, and case studies to support climate resilience planning and implementation.

The primary challenge involved collecting, formatting, and presenting a wide array of resources for two distinct user groups: expert users such as government officials and academic researchers requiring advanced filtering and search, and non-expert community members needing guidance on climate resilience concepts and practical next steps. The platform had to serve both audiences intuitively while remaining manageable for administrators.

Designing a Multi-Path Experience for Diverse Audiences

Spruce built a research-grade but community-accessible resource hub, serving expert and non-expert users through dual information architectures powered by WordPress and informed by 50+ user testing participants.

Structured Navigation for Real Project Workflows

We built a searchable resource database with advanced filtering to help users quickly find relevant resilience tools, funding, and guidance. By structuring content with consistent metadata and intuitive filters, the platform supports both targeted searches by expert users and open-ended exploration by community members, making complex information easier to discover and use.

Smarter Discovery Through Topics, Locations, and Taxonomy

To make complex content easier to explore, we implemented topic-based and location-based filtering supported by a scalable metadata and taxonomy framework. This structure improves search accuracy, supports flexible browsing paths, and ensures the platform can grow without losing clarity or organization.

Accessible, User-Centered Interface Design

We designed a clean, modern interface optimized for clarity, accessibility, and ease of use. Thoughtful layout, readable typography, and inclusive design patterns ensure the platform serves a broad range of users, from technical experts to community members without overwhelming or excluding any audience.

The Long Island Sound Resilience Hub launched as a trusted, comprehensive resource for coastal communities across the region serving as a model for making complex, multi-stakeholder environmental information accessible to both expert and everyday users. The administrative team has successfully maintained the site with minimal development support post-launch.
